Candid Teacher Admits: It feels like a Monday through and through thanks to the way my principal began my day.

I cannot believe what I went through this morning.  If it was truly a Monday (as it felt to me), I don’t think I could have made it through the week with my sanity in tact.
This morning I met with my (much despised) principal to discuss progress reports and which, if any, students would be released from my reading program.  Though I feel two of my students no longer need my support, my principal advised that I continue working with them because, “Their parents are difficult,”  Solid reasoning.

Then, as I stood to leave her office she said to me, “I like to try to help the new teachers.  Sometimes I take it for granted that not all of the new teachers know everything.”  Here, I braced myself for whatever words of “wisdom” she was going to insult me with.  “Did you know that on Fridays staff members wear the school colors?”  I told her, “Yes, but I thought that was optional,” to which she replied, “Well if you want to wear jeans, it isn’t.  And if we still had our previous superintendent, you could get in some serious trouble for this.”
Are you freaking kidding me?  Not, “Job well done,” (I’ll never hear that one) or even a relative constructive criticism about the reading program.  Instead, I received a nasty comment on the color of my shirt.  SERIOUSLY.  I know I shouldn’t let such a petty, moronic comment get to me (especially when she was wearing ridiculous orange stretchy gaucho capri pants.. yeah, I’ll let you picture that one), but it’s really difficult not to let it marinate in my mind.  Also, I’d like to point out that I saw several other staff members who were not wearing the school colors.  I’m sure they didn’t get a slap on the wrist for it.

I’m a damn good teacher and I’ve headlined this new reading program for the ENTIRE district.  But no, the color of my shirt could get me in trouble.  I’m left without words.

Yours,

Candid Teacher
